12 Topics - 12 Photos - 24 Hours: How to Prepare for the Challenge

Taking part in a photomarathon is an exciting creative challenge. With 12 themes to capture in just 24 hours, the key to success is preparation. While the day itself is all about spontaneity and creativity, a little planning beforehand can help you focus on enjoying the experience and capturing great images.

  • Make Sure Your Equipment Is Ready: Before the event begins, check that your camera or smartphone is fully charged and working properly. If you’re using a camera, make sure you have spare batteries and plenty of memory card space. Smartphone users may want to bring a portable power bank to keep their phone charged throughout the day.

  • Practice with your gear: This is no time to be using a new camera for the first time!

  • Travel Light: You’ll likely be walking around searching for inspiration, so try to keep your equipment simple. One camera or a smartphone is usually more than enough. The aim is to stay flexible and ready to respond when you see an interesting scene.

  • Think About Creativity, Not Perfection: The themes will only be revealed during the event, so it’s impossible to plan specific shots in advance. Instead, prepare yourself to think creatively and interpret the topics in your own way. Sometimes the simplest ideas make the strongest photographs.

  • Get help: If you’re stuck on a topic, Google it! Use a thesaurus to fine alternative meanings, or ask a passer-by what they think. There is no monopoly on good ideas!

  • Look for Light and Interesting Details: Great photography often comes down to noticing small details: reflections, textures, shadows or unexpected moments. Keep your eyes open and explore different perspectives.

  • Take Breaks and Enjoy the Day: A 24-hour challenge doesn’t mean you have to photograph constantly. Pace yourself, enjoy the process and, if you’re taking part with friends, make it a social experience. Rest stops, food and drink are all great times to get inspiration for the next topics.

Most importantly, remember that a photomarathon is about creativity, exploration and having fun with photography. With a little preparation and an open mind, you’ll be ready to take on the challenge and capture your 12 images.
