Why Creativity Matters for Your Mental Health

Yosef Adest of 52Frames writes about creative challenges, and how important they are in everyday life.

Creativity has always played an important role in mental health. It gives the brain a chance to stretch, adapt, and stay active. It encourages neuroplasticity, challenges our usual patterns of thinking, and gives us a meaningful way to process the world around us.

But today, creativity may be more important than ever.

We live in an environment where everyone and everything is competing for our attention. Our phones, screens, notifications, feeds, and endless doomscrolling make it harder and harder to simply pause. In that kind of world, focused creative activity is not just nice to have. It becomes essential.

I run a project called 52Frames, where I give photographers a new photo challenge every week. What started as a way to help people improve their photography quickly revealed itself to be something much deeper.

I hear from participants again and again that these challenges literally change their brain and the way they see the world. Long after a challenge is over, they still notice the  creative remnants of challenges from the past:: triangular compositions, leading lines, interesting textures on the ground, okeh, shadows, etc.. The details they otherwise would have overlooked.

This focused creative exercise is a gift for the brain. It creates a calm oasis in a sea of noise.

Creativity helps clear the clutter from your mind. It can act like a leaf blower for all the noise and voices in your head, and you don’t even realize it, until you find yourself dripping water into an old fish tank in the garage for three hours, trying to get a creative photo.

And the best part is that you do not need to be at a certain skill level. You do not need the perfect gear, a fancy studio, or years of experience. Access to creativity begins with one simple act: starting.

That’s where all the magic happens.

Yosef
